The official opening of Ireland’s first accessible outdoor gym took place at Cuisle Holiday Centre in Donamon, Co. Roscommon last week. Cuisle Holiday Centre is Ireland's leading wheelchair accessible resort and is also Irish Wheelchair Association's (IWA) National Holiday Centre. Twelve pieces of accessible equipment which include a foot cycle, body twist, chest press and hand cycle were donated to the holiday centre by Outfit, who specialise in the supply and installation of outdoor fitness machines.

Cuisle is a unique venue which specialises in weekend and holiday breaks for people with physical disabilities and limited mobility. Located within the magnificent 50 acre site of Donamon Castle, the Holiday Centre has 34 accessible ensuite bedrooms, a fine dining restaurant, hair salon and also offers leisure and conference facilities. The holiday centre aims to provide enjoyable and active holidays to guests of all ages and is delighted to officially open the outdoor facility for guests to exercise and workout during their stay while taking in the fabulous grounds of the centre.

Kathleen McLoughlin, CEO of Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) was joined by local IWA members, guests and the local community during the official opening of the outdoor gym and said:

When the sun is shining and the days are bright there is nothing like a holiday to lift our spirits and energise us, and when dark evenings stretch on in winter a short break can provide that necessary escape. The addition of the accessible outdoor gym enhances the overall experience for our guests their families and friends.

IWA aims to offer choice and variety to guests with all levels of needs and the accessible outdoor gym, which we are proud to say is a first in Ireland, enhances the service and range of facilities which the holiday centre can provide to individuals and their families, group tours, the general public and to international guests.

In 2013 IWA’s three holiday centres were awarded the EIQA Able Tourism Award, the Q Mark for Accessibility recognising the Associations commitment and dedication to providing appropriate accessible and high quality services to customers with disabilities. Feedback from guests suggested that the leisure suite, which incorporates a Jacuzzi and sauna were amongst the most popular facilities for guests staying at the holiday centre. The new outdoor facility is an exciting addition for guests, local people and staff from Roscommon who visit the grounds frequently to enjoy the outdoor trails.

Chris Glynn, who sponsored the equipment explained:

Outfit was delighted to install our new range of equipment, especially designed for wheelchair users. We wish everyone many hours of enjoyment while exercising outdoors, with all the added benefits that working-out in the fresh air can bring.
