IWA 10th Anniversary Fishing Competition
Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) in partnership with Waterways Ireland will host a national angling competition at the 12th Lock, Grand Canal, Newcastle Road in Lucan, Co Dublin today. The annual competition, which is now in its tenth year, will see over 200 anglers, with physical disabilities and other mobility impairments compete in the shore based fishing competition.
The competition which is organised by IWA Lucan has grown in popularity over the past ten years due to the ideal location for fishing, which has safe access for people with disabilities, and a secure waters-edge suitable for wheelchairs.
Ciaran McLoughlin, IWA Resource & Outreach Centre Coordinator Lucan commented:
Previous contests have seen anglers travel from all over Ireland to participate in the event, which is now a regular fixture on the Irish angling calendar. To celebrate ten successful years IWA has invited other community, voluntary and disability organisations to enter a team and will be awarding a bespoke 10th Anniversary trophy to the winning team and coveted medals to individuals.
I would like to thank the organisations who partner with IWA each year for the fishing competition. It is through these successful community based partnerships that the Association can continue to deliver high quality, person centred services. The Resource & Outreach Centre in Lucan provides services to over 60 local people with disabilities on a weekly basis. Today, we have over 200 people participating in the event along the canal, and this is made possible as a result of the ongoing commitment from Waterways Ireland, Inland Fisheries and Goldfish Angling.
Fishing is an ideal sporting and recreational activity for people with physical and sensory disabilities. Irish Wheelchair Association regularly organises trips and fishing based holidays for members of the Association. The sport is extremely popular as it presents less barriers and more opportunities for people with limited mobility. IWA’s national holiday centre and Irelands leading wheelchair accessible resort, Cuisle includes 31 accessible fishing bays along the River Suck.
