IWA Update Regarding the Mobility Allowance and Motorised Transport Grant

IWA Update Regarding the Mobility Allowance and Motorised Transport Grant

Friday, 12 April 2013

As Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) members are aware, the Department of Health recently invited individuals who are currently in receipt of the Mobility Allowance and Motorised Transport Grant and those with an interest in the issue, to participate in a public consultation to find the most appropriate solution or solutions to address the priority transport needs of those who require supports.

As part of the public consultation process individuals were invited to complete a ten part questionnaire and submit their responses by Wednesday, 17th April 2012. This questionnaire is currently available online www.iwa.ie and available from all IWA Resource and Outreach Centres nationwide.

The Department of Health has also announced that the National Disability Authority (NDA), as an independent statutory body, will facilitate 4 focus group sessions to converse directly with individuals who would like to share their views and ideas on possible alternative ways of providing transport supports.
The focus groups are open to people with disabilities who are currently in receipt of the Mobility Allowance or Motorised Transport Grant and those who are not currently receiving either of the schemes.

The Department of Health will participate in the focus group sessions to provide information about the schemes and to hear the views of those present. The first focus group is scheduled to take place in the Clonbrusk Resource Centre, Coosan Road, Athlone on Thursday 18th April 2013, from 11:00am -  1.00pm.

Three more focus groups will be facilitated on the following consecutive dates and locations.

Irish Wheelchair Association staff are aware of the public consultation and the upcoming focus groups taking place throughout the country, and are available to assist members with their expressions of interest.

If you are selected to attend a focus group, please contact your local Resource and Outreach Centre as soon as your place has been confirmed if you require transport or assistance on the day.

IWA will continue to update our members regularly on this issue and any information as it becomes available.
