Mobility Allowance and Motorised Transport Grant
Mobility Allowance and Motorised Transport Grant Scheme Update
Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) would like to update our members and service users on the most recent information available from the Department of Health regarding the Mobility Allowance and Motorised Transport Grant.
Last month the Government announced that the two current schemes for people with disabilities will be discontinued as they breach equality legislation.
Since then, The Minister for Health, Dr. James Reilly T.D. and the Minister of State for Disability, Equality, Mental Health and Older People, Ms Kathleen Lynch T.D., appointed a review group on 21 February 2013 to review the Mobility Allowance and Motorised Transport Grant schemes.
The purpose of the review group is to find the most appropriate solution or solutions to address the priority transport needs of those who require supports, which will be fully compliant with equality legislation and can be delivered within available funding.
As part of the review, a public consultation is taking place over the next two weeks. The purpose of the consultation is to hear the views of the widest possible number of people who have an interest in this issue and in particular the people who are currently in receipt of either the Mobility Allowance or the Motorised Transport Grant.
Irish Wheelchair Association welcomes the public consultation process and is pleased that our members, service users and people with disabilities throughout Ireland have been provided with an opportunity to offer feedback and deliver their opinions on the review of transport supports.
As a leading representative organisation for people with disabilities Irish Wheelchair Association is committed to ensuring that the Government recognises the importance of the Mobility Allowance and the Motorised Transport Grant. The Association encourages all our members and services users to participate in the review by completing the relevant questionnaire and demonstrate how their lives would be adversely affected by the removal of the schemes.
There are 3 ways to complete the questionnaire:
IWA staff nationwide are available to support members to participate in this process. If you would like support in completing the questionnaire please contact your local Resource and Outreach Centre where a member of staff is available to help anyone who requires assistance with the document. The questionnaire must be completed and returned in the above forms before 17.00pm on Wednesday, 17th April 2013.
IWA will continue to keep our members and service users informed of any new developments on the issue and the outcomes of the public consultation process as it becomes available.
