New accessible bus takes to the roads in Laois

Friday, 05 December 2014

Local members of the Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA), Laois were joined by friends, family, staff and volunteers as they launched a new accessible bus which will provide a vital service to people with disabilities living in Portlaoise and the surrounding areas.Laois T.D, Sean Fleming, community groups and local supporters who assisted IWA to raise the necessary funds to purchase the bus also celebrated the launch, at an event held in the IWA Resource and Outreach Centre, located on the Mountmellick Road.

This new accessible bus was specifically adapted to meet the needs and requirements of people with physical disabilities or other mobility impairments. The bus service is a critical resource that enables IWA members to participate in the range of services and supports which the Association provides in Laois and to access other essential services they may require in the community.

Speaking about the new accessible bus, IWA Service Coordinator Josephine Kenny explained:

IWA’s fleet of accessible vehicles is one of the Association’s most distinctive and valuable resources. IWA buses can be seen in every corner of the country, transporting our members to and from a wide range of IWA and community activities.

On the road 24/7, whether transporting young athletes to training, older members on a shopping outing, or young friends heading to a concert, in many cases the IWA bus is a lifeline without which people would be isolated and confined to their homes.

Irish Wheelchair Association has been providing services to people with physical disabilities in Laois for more than 15 years and supports over 40 people to attend the Resource and Outreach Centre on a weekly basis. The aim of the centre is to provide opportunities to people with disabilities so that they can lead full, active, integrated and independent lives in their own communities.

Josephine Kenny thanked the local community for their continued supported and generosity:

IWA relies heavily on fundraising initiatives to enable the Association to continue to provide vital services in local communities. We would like to thank all our local supporters who organised an event or fundraising initiative to help us raise the necessary funds to purchase a brand new bus for our members
