Irish Wheelchair Association Opens New Community Centre in Killarney with the support of Dancing with the Stars & GAA star Aidan O’Mahony

A new multi-purpose community centre which will benefit people with physical disabilities was officially opened by Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) in Killarney on Friday, 12th May 2017. Kerry GAA & Dancing with the Star’s Champion, Aidan O’Mahony joined IWA members, staff and volunteers to officially open a new modern, spacious and welcoming community facility which will provide a range of essential services and supports to people living in Killarney and the surrounding areas.

The event brought together local people, businesses and community organisations who celebrated the opening of the new Community Centre located in The Reeks Gateway, Killarney. Joining Aidan O’Mahony was Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Brendan Cronin in the company of Michael Hickey, Chairman of IWA, Rosemary Keogh CEO of IWA and Terry O’Brien, IWA Service Coordinator, Killarney who was on hand to unveil the amenities and accessible features which the new Community Centre has to offer.

Comprising a large multi-functional room, community meeting rooms, dining area and outdoor space, the new Community Centre is the culmination of over 5 years of discussion, planning and building. The new facility will benefit approximately 30 local IWA members while also catering for the growth of essential services in the area. Two accessible buses will be on the road each week to support people with physical disabilities to access the range of programmes available from the modern space.

Speaking at the launch CEO of IWA, Rosemary Keogh said:

People are central to everything IWA does with a focus on improving quality of life. Local IWA members living in Killarney and the surrounding areas deserve to have a modern centre that has been custom built to support their needs and requirements. IWA’s new Community Centre based in the heart of Killarney will provide people with physical disabilities greater independence, freedom and choice, enriching their quality of life by delivering a broad range of social, educational, sporting programmes and activities.

She continued:

Through community spirit, and the partnerships formed by local people, statutory and voluntary agencies, neighbouring businesses and organisations, IWA now has a modern, top-class facility which is a credit to all involved, and will serve the community well for many years to come.

As Ireland’s leading representative organisation and service provider for people with physical disabilities IWA advocates for the needs of people with physical disabilities and provides services and support to over 500 members in their homes and communities throughout Kerry every year.

IWA’s new Community Centre will contribute to improve the lives of people with disabilities and will be a local hub that enables people with disabilities to participate in all aspects of community life in Killarney and throughout Kerry.

Speaking at the opening of the new centre, IWA Service Coordinator, Terry O’Brien explained:

I am very proud to open our new centre in Killarney today which will work in conjunction with existing IWA services in Tralee and Listowel. The range of community support services based in The Reeks, will ensure that people with disabilities living in Killarney and neighbouring towns and communities will receive high quality services which directly impact, enhance and improve the quality of their lives and that of their family members. IWA welcomes all local people, groups, schools and organisations to visit our new centre and utilise the amenities available from here.
