Flora Women's Mini Marathon 2013
For 2013 I decided to take part in the women’s mini marathon on behalf of the IWA. The reason I picked the IWA as my chosen charity is because I get so much from the organisation both local and nationally, that I felt it was about time that I gave something back.
I attend my local day service on Mondays and Wednesdays; these are the highlight of my week because as I live independently it can get quite lonely at times.I am also a member of the National Youth Advisory Group, who meets every eight weeks.
On the 3rd of June 2013, I took part in my 4th consecutive mini marathon. Even though I have done them before I am always filled with amazement at not only the turnout but all the different coloured tee-shirts, each colour representing their own chosen charities. It is like a moving rainbow whether you are a walker or a wheeler like me.
The weather as we set off from Navan was dull and raining hence we brought our rain gear. Little did we know that rain gear was the last thing we needed- we should have stocked up on sun cream. But did we!!? No! Therefore, we got a lovely roasting on the day. It had to be the hottest day of the year. The atmosphere was electric and every one was in high spirits, even the bearded ladies in their borrowed frocks.
Some people had sore feet, I had a sore head from all the pats I got on it either wishing me luck or congratulating me for being part of a special event in the calendar year. It was special for a different reason for each person, be it personal, a memory they want to hold on to or a team event where they are making new memories and traditions that may continue for a long time to come.
I finished the marathon in 2:8mins but I achieved my own goal of raising awareness and much needed funds for an organisation that I feel gives so much to me and expects so little in return.
