1916 Youth Event
On Wednesday the 15th June, three IWA youth members from Dublin travelled to Aras an Uachtarain to meet the President Michael D. Higgins and commemorate the young people (40) who died in the 1916 Rising. In late 2015, the three lads represented their peers on a Department of Children and Youth Affairs (DCYA) committee. The idea of the initial workshop was to have young people from all over Ireland come together and discuss the young people who died during 1916, and accordingly, decide on ways to commemorate their lives during 2016. Having thrashed through a number of ideas, it was put forward that for each of the 40 young people who died, a lantern would be presented to the president of Ireland, to honour both the young people and their families.
Wednesday the 15th June was a lovely summer’s morning and the three lads arrived, dressed very smartly and looking forward to rubbing shoulders with the president and his entourage. The lads got a guided tour of the Aras and the gardens, both eye opening experiences, akin to something out of a Hollywood film! The memorial event itself was a lovely occasion, with two of our youth group involved in presenting the lanterns to the president. A time capsule was then buried in the Aras gardens, in another commemoration to the 40 young people.
There was some great fun after the ceremony in the Aras garden with live music, games galore and tasty delights to sample. There was a lovely atmosphere as President Higgins took his time in meeting and greeting all the young people in attendance.
All in all it was a great day out for the three young lads involved and they did a fantastic job representing the views and ideas from their peers in the IWA. We had a sneaky word with the President’s head of security on the way out and we’re putting in an application to host our youth service Christmas party in the Aras in 2016!
