What are the Volunteer Award categories?

The following are the nomination categories and you can only select one category per nomination:

  1. IWA Branch of the Year
  2. 2. IWA Service Volunteer of the Year i.e. the Resource and Outreach Service, Holiday Services or Motoring Services, Administration and Fundraising
  3. IWA Young Volunteer of the Year (18 - 30 years of age)
  4. IWA Staff Volunteer of the Year
  5. IWA Lifetime Achievement Award
  6. IWA Corporate Volunteer of the Year

Do these awards include IWA Sport activities?

No, as IWA Sport operates a separate Volunteer Awards Programme annually. Further information is available at www.iwasport.com or 01 818 6400


Who can nominate?

IWA members, IWA service user, IWA volunteers, IWA member of staff, family or friend.


Can children be nominated?

No, nominees must be 18 years of age or over.


Can I nominate myself?

Individuals may not nominate themselves, however branch members may nominate their own branch.


Who can I nominate?

  • IWA Volunteers, IWA Branches, & Businesses who support IWA through voluntary activity.
  • IWA volunteers can be full-time, part-time, once-off, regular, new or old.

Is there a limit to the number of nominations I can make?

There is no limit on how many people or businesses you can nominate.


How do I choose a category?

Choose the category that in your opinion best suits the voluntary work of the nominee. Don’t worry if you are unsure what one to choose, we will correct the category if we feel it is not the most suitable.


When is the Awards Ceremony?

The Irish Wheelchair Association Volunteer Awards Ceremony will be on Saturday 13th May 2017 at the INEC, Muckross Road, Killarney, Co. Kerry.


When and where can I nominate?

  • Online nominations will be open on Wednesday 8th March 2017 and close at 5pm on Thursday 13th April 2017
  • Hard Copy Nomination Forms will be included in the Spring edition of Spokeout, IWA’s quarterly magazine, due for circulation in March 2017.

What happens when I submit my nomination?

  • Online nomination will be acknowledged immediately to confirm submission of your nomination.
  • Following the awards ceremony every nominee will be sent a personalised Certificate from Irish Wheelchair Association to acknowledge their nomination and contribution as a volunteer.
  • Category winners will be contacted in early May 2016 using the contact details supplied on the nomination form. They will be invited to the IWA AGM & Conference Volunteer Awards Dinner in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Santry, Dublin on Saturday 14th May 2016.
  • Nominators of the category winners will be informed of their nominee’s success in early May prior to the Awards.

How are nominations assessed?

  • A judging panel reviews the nominations.
  • Each nomination will be read and scored.
  • Each nominee will only be judged on the information provided with that nomination.
  • The judging panel will issue recommendations for category winners to a panel consisting of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Irish Wheelchair Association, the IWA National Director of Volunteers and the IWA Company Secretary.
  • This panel issues a final decision on the category winners.

What is the Corporate Volunteer Award?

IWA receives ongoing voluntary support from a variety of companies and businesses both locally and nationally throughout Ireland. These businesses volunteer their staff, time, or benefit in kind to the work of IWA. Please note this is not an award for financial donations. The Award is an opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of the Corporate sector to the work of IWA.


What is an IWA Service Volunteer of the Year?

The majority of IWA volunteers work alongside a particular service such as the Resource and Outreach Service, Holiday Services or Motoring Services, Administration and Fundraising etc. Activities can include driving, administration, cooking, cleaning, maintenance, gardening, programmes etc.


What is an IWA Lifetime Achievement Award?

This award recognises an individual’s significant voluntary contribution of time, skill and talent to the work of the Association over many years.


How is the Overall IWA Volunteer of the Year selected?

This Award applies to individual volunteers only and not branch or business nominations.

The winner is selected by the judging panel from the following category winners based on the highest marking.

  • IWA Staff Volunteer of the Year
  • IWA Service Volunteer of the Year i.e. ROCs, ALS, Holiday Services, Administration, Fundraising etc.
  • IWA Young Volunteer of the Year (18 – 30 years of age)

The Overall IWA Volunteer of the Year Award will be announced at the IWA AGM & Conference Volunteer Awards Gala Dinner on Saturday May 13th in the INEC, Muckross Road, Killarney, Co. Kerry.
