Coastal Camino Way
Portuguese Coastal Route
9th – 16th May 2020
Walk the Camino de Santiago to raise vital funds for Irish Wheelchair Association this October!
With over 20,000 people with physical disabilities as members, IWA must raise €1 million in funds this year so we can continue to provide vital services.
Embark on the challenge of a lifetime and join Irish Wheelchair Association on the final section of the Portuguese Coastal Route of the Camino de Santiago, following a beautiful trail from the maritime city of Vigo to wonderful Santiago de Compostela.
Enjoy great views of the Atlantic shoreline, distant Islas Cies and sheltered waters of the Vigo Estuary as you walk along the opening stage. The Portuguese Coastal Camino then converges with the original Portuguese Camino in the town of Redondela and continues through sloping forested valleys and clustered Galician farmsteads.
The fishing village of Arcade awaits, as does the magnificent historic city of Pontevedra, the spa town of Caldas de Reis, the symbolic settlement of Padron and finally, the wonderful ancient city of Santiago de Compostela where you will get your Pilgrim’s Certificate or Compostela.
Aside from an amazing physical accomplishment whether walking or rolling the distance, the best thing about being on the Camino de Santiago is the opportunity for personal reflection. Focusing all your energy on walking from morning to night, and keeping your rhythm as you walk or roll, is like an amazing form of meditation each day. Buen Camino!
What is the Camino de Santiago?
The Camino de Santiago, or “The Way” as it is also widely known, is a network of ancient pilgrim trails which finish at the tomb of St James, in Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, Spain.

Camino walkers often attach a shell to their bags to symbolise their pilgrimage and wish fellow walkers “Buen Camino”, a gesture of camaraderie and good luck for their journey.
There is a long link between St. James’ Gate in Dublin and the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. This was the traditional starting point for pilgrims leaving from Dublin and pilgrim passports can still be stamped at St. James’ Church nearby.
