The housing association takes nominations from the local Council. Register with your local authority and indicate your interest in the particular housing association. Your name will be forwarded by the local authority and the application process will proceed from there.
I met a local councillor last night and I was complaining about the lack of housing for people with disabilities. He said that there was no need for housing for people with disabilities. This is not true; loads of my friends have disabilities and need housing! How can we let them know that we need housing?
The best way to indicate your housing need is to put your name on the housing list by registering with your local Council. When local authorities are assessing housing needs, one of the resources they use is the local authority housing list. As far as they are concerned if you are not on the list your need doesn’t exist!
The grant you should check out with your local Council, Housing Grants Department, is the Housing Adaptation Grant for People with Disabilities. For a new house the maximum grant payable is €10,000.00. The grant is means test, if the household income is above €30,000.00 the grant begins to be paid on a sliding scale. At an income of or above €60,000.00 then no grant is paid. Phone the local Council to enquire and confirm these details.
Seek a meeting with the Council Housing Dept to enquire as to the status of your housing application; does your application have a priority on the Housing List and if not is there anything further you can do to achieve a priority in your application (further medical reports etc)? Then ask what plans does the Council have to house people needing wheelchair accessible accommodation and you in particular and how long do they think that will that take?
Also ask the Council to refer you to any Voluntary Housing Associations with properties or building in the area. The Council will know what voluntary housing associations operate in the area.
I have been looking for long term wheelchair accessible/adapted housing to rent or share. I was wondering if you can tell me where to find a list of places, anywhere in the country which are available to rent?
Unfortunately there is no actual list of accessible rental accommodation available – there are no estate agents or organisations that particularly keep note of accessible accommodation. It is a matter of using property web sites, contacting local estate agents and putting up local “accommodation wanted” advertisements. Often estate agents and web sites do not know if a property is really accessible or can be made accessible so making out your own checklist of your requirements would be helpful to you and to estate agents and property owners. It can be difficult to find the “ideal” property but many people do find rental properties that are adequate.
If you require PA to live in your own home, you should contact your local HSE Disability Manager. You might want to consider applying for PA service before you move from your present accommodation to get used to working with PAs and to begin to build up enough hours to be able to live in your own place.
You might also contact the Assisted Living Service in the local IWA centre who will be able to advise you on who the Disability Manager for your area is and where to contact him/her. The IWA provides PA services but has to be funded by the HSE to do so.

Local Councils have a responsibility to respond to the right of people with disabilities to live as independently as possible in their preferred living situation and unless they know your needs they can’t meet it. Rent allowance, or rent supplement, is received through the Community Welfare Officer. Application forms are available from your Local Health Office or online. In order to be eligible for rent allowance your friend must be on the housing list. He will do this by registering with his local authority.
