IWA Pays Tribute to Martin Naughton
IIt is with great sadness that we share the news of the death of our friend, colleague and former member of IWA’s Board of Directors, Martin Naughton who has passed away after a brief illness.
A native of An Spideal in Co Galway, Martin spent most of his childhood as a resident in St Mary's Hospital in Baldoyle, Dublin. From his early years, Martin was determined to drive change, advocate for improvements in services and create opportunities for people with disabilities.
Martin devoted much of his life to raising awareness of disability and led campaigns for services and rights legislation. A pioneer of the independent living movement, he fought hard to ensure that all people, regardless of their disability, are given the option of living independently.
An extremely effective advocate and activist, Martin was a champion for people with disabilities. Most recently, he was appointed to the Government’s advisory committee on individualised funding for the sector.
He is survived by his sisters, nephews, nieces and a large family of friends. Martin will be deeply missed by his friends from Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) who he worked alongside for many years.
