Remembering Sr Carmel Fallon
It is with great sadness that Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) responds to the passing of our dear friend and long-time supporter, Sr. Carmel Fallon.
Throughout her long relationship with IWA, Sr Carmel had been a tireless campaigner for disability rights and services, both in her local community of Athy, Co. Kildare, and throughout Ireland.
Sr Carmel was instrumental in the establishment of the Kildare branch of IWA in 1969, and in founding Teach Emmanuel in 1987. Teach Emmanuel was the first IWA Day Centre to be located outside of Dublin, and still provides services to people with disabilities living in Athy and the surrounding areas to this day.
Sr Carmel Fallon served as President of Irish Wheelchair Association from 1991 to 2001. In recognition of the enormous amount of devotion and support she gave to IWA over the decades, the ‘Carmel Fallon Holiday Centre’ in Clontarf was dedicated to her in 2003.
Sr Carmel Fallon will be greatly missed by IWA members, staff and volunteers around the country. Her work had far-reaching effects for our members and their families, and she will always be fondly remembered by the Association.
