In May, we celebrated 100 days until the Paralympic Games at the Para Athletics Jamie Boyle Games in Templemore. With over 40 IWA-Sport athletes registered for the games, it was a perfect day to get excited for the Paralympics! Next for para athletics is the Munster Games at Templemore Athletics Club on June 29th.
As the Paralympics get closer, our para powerlifters head to Tblisi, Georgia for the Para Powerlifting World Cup on June 20th. It’s the final qualifying event for the Paralympic Games for Britney Arendse and Niamh Buckley. We’ll be providing updates on the full Irish squad competing as the competition happens.
May was also a big month for our education course, where seven IWA-Sport members graduated from the Women in Sport Leadership course. IWA-Sport also ran two Level 0 Introduction to Wheelchair Basketball Coaching courses in Cork and Mayo with 15 members completing the course in total.
Now the Irish Wheelchair Rugby League has ended for the season, the national squad have begun preparations for the European Championships Division B this autumn. The team are going to be put through their paces throughout the summer, training at IWA-Sport HQ in Clontarf.
And finally, a massive congratulations to IWA-Sport members Tiarnan O’Donnell and Mary Fitzgerald. Mary moved up to number 2 in the world rankings after throwing a whopping 8.87m in her shot-put event at the Loughborough International Athletics on May 19th. While on May 25th, Tiarnan won a silver medal in the World Rowing Cup on his international debut in the PR2 men’s single scull in Lucerne, Switzerland.
