Self-Advocacy Success in Portloaise
Ellen from Tullow in Co Carlow was diagnosed with Cerebellar Atrophy in November, a degenerative disorder that affects the cerebellum, brain stem and spinal cord, almost ten years after she first experienced the onset of symptoms.
“I was 27 and had just got married when I first got sick, and my condition has deteriorated since. I am here on my own most of the day as my husband is at work. I have had to completely adjust my life. I can no longer work, and I feel I have lost friends due to my illness because I was no longer able to do much” she said.

Feeling lonely and longing for some kind of outlet, Ellen’s parents suggested that she try the Irish Wheelchair Association.
“I knew I needed to do something, but I was a bit apprehensive. I didn’t know what to expect.
“But it has completely changed by life. It was the best decision I ever made,” said Ellen who started off in the Carlow centre one day a week which has now been increased to two.
“I absolutely love it. It gives me purpose. I have made a few goods friends, and I really enjoy the activities like the art, pottery and history projects.”
Her advice to others thinking about joining IWA is to just do it!
“It’s something to do during the day. It has changed my life. Sometimes my mood would have been down, but I am far more upbeat now. I’m not just at home all day seven days a week. I really would encourage others to join, to try it.
“We are all friends there, and we help each other out. It’s an outlet, it’s fun, it clears your mind and it is good for your health.
“The time has flown by since I joined,” Ellen added.
