When Laura Creevey takes part in the VHI Women’s Mini Marathon on Sunday June 1st to raise money for Irish Wheelchair Association, she knows that her late auntie Rachel will be looking down proudly and egging her on every step of the way!

Rachel, who sadly passed away a year and eight months ago, worked with IWA’s youth service for about seven years.

A passionate advocate for the disability community and a person with a huge sense of fun, Rachel left a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her, not least her own nieces and nephews.

Laura said: “I wanted to fundraise for a charity that meant something to auntie Rachel and that’s why I chose IWA.  She loved supporting the young members.

“Auntie Rachel had Osteogenesis Imperfecta.  When I was young, she used to take me out and I used to stand on the back of her wheelchair.  I thought it was so much fun.”

She recalled:  She was so much fun to be around but always looked after me so well too. Her laugh was infectious and everyone who knew her remembers her chuckle.

Rachel loved lego, a passion she passed onto her niece.  “She had a huge collection and inspired me to start my own collection too.”

As Laura prepares for the mini marathon challenge it’s the memory of her beloved auntie that spurs her on.

“I know that raising money in memory of her would make her so proud”.
