IWA recognised the lack of wheelchair accessible housing as a major issue for its members and became an Approved Housing Body (AHB) in 1984.
Approved Housing Bodies are not-for-profit organisations that have a social purpose to provide for people’s housing needs Currently Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) owns 51 Houses / apartments across 7 counties (Dublin, Kilkenny, Carlow, Tipperary, Galway, Mayo and Roscommon).
Our homes use assistive technologies to allow tenants with physical disabilities to live independently and be fully part of a supportive and inclusive community.

We have been awarded Best Houses for People with Disabilities at the 2019 Irish Council of Social Housing Allianz Community Housing Awards and were also winners of Excellence in Health & Wellbeing with the Chartered Institute of Housing in 2021.

Since its foundation in 1960 IWA has played its part in influencing the development of public housing policy and as an approved housing body, has also played an important role in developing and managing high-quality housing in a person-centred way.
