The curtains are set to raise this weekend on a new season of Irish Wheelchair Basketball, with the quarter finals of the Basketball Ireland InsureMyHouse.ie National Cup and first round of the Junior Blitz.

Another chapter of Irish Wheelchair Basketball begins this weekend when the 2024/25 season starts with the Basketball Ireland InsureMyHouse.ie National Cup quarter finals. Taking place at IWA-Sport, Clontarf, it sees Cork’s Rebel Wheelers Multi-Sport Club looking to defend the cup for a sixth year in a row.

Then on Sunday, the future stars of Irish Wheelchair Basketball return to the court, also at IWA-Sport in Clontarf for the opening round of the Junior Blitz.

Starting with the seniors, the quarter finals get underway at 10am, where Ballybrack Bulls take on Dundalk’s North East Thunder. Then after, champions Rebel Wheelers will face Titans Wheelers of Galway at 12:00. In action at 14:00 are the 2023 finalists against the 2024 finalists, Limerick Celtics vs South East Swifts, both looking to book a place in the semi-finals and go one step further this season and be crowned National Cup winners.

The Irish Wheelchair Basketball season starts with the National Cup two weeks before the league returns on October 5th.

The final game of the day sees Killester Wheelchair Basketball Club go up against Clonaslee Wheelchair Basketball Club at 16:00.

The quarter final is free for all to attend and take in the thrilling sport of Wheelchair Basketball but for those that can’t make it to IWA-Sport HQ, we’ll be live streaming each game on IWA-Sport’s Facebook page.

We won’t have long to wait for more action when the Irish Wheelchair Basketball League then opens on Saturday 5th October where Clonaslee Wheelchair Basketball will play host. The season will contain ten rounds before wrapping up in May 2025 with the perpetual cups up for grabs.

The first Junior Blitz of the season starts at IWA-Sport HQ on Sunday 22nd September.

After all that, our focus then turns to the first round of the Irish Wheelchair Basketball Junior Blitz, where six teams will face off in a fun environment. Wheelchair Basketball players aged between 5-17 will take part in shortened versions of the game, learning the skills of the game and team building playing multiple games throughout the day.

The demand for Junior Wheelchair Basketball has grown rapidly in recent years and as a result we will have eight rounds between September and April 2025 with nine teams taking part.

Wheelchair Basketball is open to anyone aged 5+ with a physical disability with nine clubs for senior players (15+) and nine for juniors (5-17). Abled-bodied people are welcome to join too. All clubs train on a regular basis and always welcome new members both that want to compete or participate.
